iOS & Android Orange Release

Our Orange update drops today—just in time for Halloween.

Membership Updates, Group Push Notifications, Subscription Features, and Music Player Upgrades!

With new feature releases and huge updates to existing ones, Orange brings plenty of treats… and it even has a few tricks up its sleeve.

Membership Accounts

  • Create one or many unique user logins for your app.
  • Assign users to specific groups and customize their access levels.
  • Enable Guest Login to provide non-users with limited access.
  • Set a custom background for your app’s login screen.

Let’s bring the idea of mailing lists into the mobile landscape! You can now create subscription categories through the Messages section of your dashboard. These categories will appear in a new menu within the app’s Messages tab, where users can opt out of receiving the types of messages they wish to ignore.

When sending push notifications, you can filter by subscription categories to target the right users and avoid bugging the wrongs ones. All push notifications will be viewable in the Messages tab, regardless of users’ specific subscription settings, but only users subscribed to a list will receive alerts from it.

Segmented Push Notifications

It doesn’t end at subscription lists. You can now select target groups or users (or both!) from your Membership Accounts for more customized push notifications.

Need to alert parents about report cards or remind faculty about this week’s conference? Can do. Just select that group from the list and only users registered to that group will receive the alert and see the message in their Messages tab.

Music Player Improvement

Users now have playback controls in the Music and Podcast features: Fast-Forward/Rewind, Next/Previous, and track scrubbing allow for precise control over your audio playback experience.

Visual Improvements

The most noticeable visual change in our Orange release is our brand new popup dialog design. It now uses the button color you’ve selected in your app’s Global Style section, adding a touch of color to the normally drab boxes.

Your prompts will really pop with this updated look, helping your messages stand out in a whole new way.

Notable Changes

  • Social Tab upgrades to work with Membership functionality.
  • iOS 9 Support with upgraded SDKs for Facebook, Twitter and more.

Do all this features also work on Android, or are some of them iOS exclusive?

    • Ryan Szot Oct 30, 2015 at 15:10 PM

      Hey Nicole,

These features are available on both platforms.

  • Alexander Oct 30, 2015 at 08:10 AM

Happy to hear you share our excitement! You’re very welcome.

  • Michelle Oct 30, 2015 at 15:10 PM

Are these available to add to existing apps, or are they only for new apps?

    • Ryan Szot Oct 30, 2015 at 16:10 PM

      Hey Michelle,

These features will need upgrades to the applications source code, so they will all require updates.

  • Brett Oct 30, 2015 at 16:10 PM

Very exciting! Bizness Apps is really becoming a force to be reckoned with. I’m glad I’m on your team!

    • Ryan Szot Oct 31, 2015 at 19:10 PM

      Hey Brett,

We are happy to have you as one of our partners!

  • Muna Oct 30, 2015 at 21:10 PM

Can u please elaborate on the customised access level by group. Can we show certain tabs to certain groups?

  • Bill Oct 30, 2015 at 22:10 PM

Great new features! The group notifications feature is AWESOME, AWESOME and I am letting some of my clients know about it, that have asked. Keep up the great work

    • Ryan Szot Oct 30, 2015 at 22:10 PM

      Thanks Bill!

  • Ian Oct 31, 2015 at 01:10 AM

    This is a great update!

    Just one question, though:
Can GPS notifications also utilise the notification groups? E.g. send a push notification to everyone in a certain GPS area that has requested “Football Updates”.

    • Ryan Szot Oct 31, 2015 at 05:10 AM

      Hey Ian,

Yes it sure can. These new notification features will work in addition to all of our previous features. So you can send a geofenced push note with a linked tab to iOS and Android to 2 groups and an additional 3 users with the ‘Football Updates’ subscription.

  • Alain Nov 01, 2015 at 03:11 AM

Ryan, This is so coool! Can we send message to a group #2 and only members of group #2 can see it even in the message tab?

    • Ryan Szot Nov 01, 2015 at 21:11 PM

      Hey Alian,

You sure can. When sending push notifications they will be restricted to whichever users or groups you have selected. Others will not see them.

  • Muna Nov 01, 2015 at 22:11 PM

Thanks Ryan, another question, if I have an App already published and I want to add and enable the new membership tab, how can I make the feature work? Do i need to republish the app?.

    • Ryan Szot Nov 01, 2015 at 23:11 PM

Yes, in order to utilize these new features an app update will be required.

  • Muna Nov 01, 2015 at 23:11 PM

    Hi Ryan,
Another question, can we demo the new membership feature to clients using the preview your app?

    • Ryan Szot Nov 01, 2015 at 23:11 PM

You sure can. Make sure you update the app from the app store! Then once you login to your app with the membership tab enabled you will see your new login screen.

Once logged in as a user you will see a new icon on your home screen. This icon will direct you to the Social Feature which now holds the ability to log out of your Membership account that is currently logged in.

  • Prabhu Nov 02, 2015 at 18:11 PM

This is great. I was waiting this feature for a while. Love you guys.

  • Josue Nov 03, 2015 at 00:11 AM

Great Update! I’ve got a question about the Membership Groups & Push Notification features. Here’s a scenario, If a High School has set different groups within the membership for different clubs offered at the High School so students can have access to specific content related to the club they have joined. If a student is a part of several clubs say Club A, B & C and therefor also a member of Groups A,B & C. If this student is logged in under Group B will he also get push notifications for the other 2 groups he is a member of? Or will he only receive notifications for Group B?

    • Ryan Szot Nov 03, 2015 at 00:11 AM

      Hey Josue,

In this scenario the student would only receive push notes for Group B. However, when the admin user is sending the push note they can add additional users to the list, so if they know who should be receiving the updates they can include the users as well.

  • John Nov 05, 2015 at 16:11 PM

Regarding the Memberships – If active, does this force the login as the opening screen or can the “membership login” be added as a Tab?

    • Ryan Szot Nov 05, 2015 at 16:11 PM

      Hey John,

It will be the first screen a user sees when they launch the app, restricting access to the app requiring them to login.

  • chris Nov 05, 2015 at 20:11 PM

where is the membership info stored? can it be managed somewhere?

    • Ryan Szot Nov 05, 2015 at 20:11 PM

      Hey Chris,

The information is stored in the Membership tab in the CMS and can be managed there.

  • JimPatrick Nov 12, 2015 at 06:11 AM

Hey Ryan and the team I would like to say a big thumbs up for the latest update, its just AWESOME. We in the UK are a little behind but catching up now on the app revolution.

Wanted to ask when can we expect to see updates with a new video player interface for both Android & iOS?

I think that would a a huge game changer as well.

  • Ali Nov 24, 2015 at 09:11 AM

    Hey Ryan,
Great work as usual! Will the segmented push notes be available in the Skipper app soon?

    • Ryan Szot Nov 24, 2015 at 16:11 PM

      Hey Ali,

Thank you, and yes Skipper will be updated soon to support this and much more!
